Robotaxi Market Heats Up As Pony.ai Unveils Its Next-gen Sensing Platform

Pony.ai has unveiled a subsequent-gen sensing platform for the company’s autonomous vehicles that brings enhanced capabilities in a a lot-improved design. The new system was designed in collaboration with Luminar Technologies. Removes the need for the unsightly cone-formed LiDAR found on the roofs of most driverless autos.

James Peng, CEO and Founder of Pony.ai, stated:

“Partnering with Luminar is a critical enabling milestone for Pony.ai as we construct our subsequent-era system and put together for giant-scale series production.

Luminar is in a league of their own in terms of LiDAR and shares our perception that delivering autonomous mobility globally will allow a safe and sustainable future.

We’re excited to realise that imaginative and prescient along with them.”

Luminar’s new “Iris” platform integrates seamlessly into the roof at just 10cm above whereas still providing vital 360-diploma knowledge using its multiple sensors.

Austin Russell, Founder and CEO of Luminar, commented:

“Pony.ai’s imaginative and prescient to create a dynamic, car-agnostic autonomous driving system may be very spectacular, and it has already demonstrated a clear leadership position for Robotaxi growth in China and beyond.

We’re leveraging the complete extent of the expertise and product development work we’ve completed through the years, and directly re-applying it to Pony.ai’s platform and fleet.

This partnership marks a significant milestone towards the realisation of safe autonomous robotaxi services in the years to come back.”

Pony.ai just lately hit the milestone of driving more than five million kilometres across an operational protection space of over 850 km².

Up to now, the corporate has supplied greater than 220,000 robotaxi rides and not too long ago expanded its service across 5 cities in China and the US - Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Irvine, and Fremont.

In 2023, Pony.ai intends to broaden its autonomous fleet globally. All of its next-gen fleet will function sensors from Luminar.

“Today, we’re lastly seeing the road blur between what we’ve referred to as stunning client automobile design and the look of a Robotaxi,” said Jason Wojack, Luminar’s SVP of Product Growth. “This is a true second in the evolution of automobile design and innovation.”

Pony.ai has fierce competitors, especially in China. Final week, Alibaba-backed rival AutoX announced that its fleet of robotaxis had reached one hundred consecutive days of operation.
